EB Games is set to close all its retail locations in New Zealand
EB Games has announced the closure of its last 38 outlets in New Zealand.
According to RNZ, these closures will occur by January 31, 2026, with the distribution center set to close on February 28.
The closure decision follows an internal memo suggesting that the New Zealand operations are no longer sustainable.
The Australian arm of EB Games will not be affected by this move, as it continues to operate its 336 stores in the country.
Managing Director Shane Stockwell stated that despite interest from several third parties after the closure announcement, none provided viable proposals to maintain the New Zealand operations.
The precise number of employees affected remains unknown, but there could be opportunities for staff to transfer to roles in Australia.
Back in 2020, the company shut down 19 unprofitable locations in Australia. Simultaneously, new outlets opened under the combined EB Games and Zing Pop Culture brand.
EB Games was founded in 1997 as Electronic Boutique and opened its first New Zealand store in Auckland in 2000. Since 2005, the retailer has been under the ownership of GameStop.
