In Mexico, there will still be no tax on "violent" video games

In September, the Ministry of Finance of Mexico proposed introducing an 8% tax on games containing “violent” content. Three months later, this idea was abandoned.

As reported by Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum at a recent press conference, officials were unable to establish clear criteria for identifying such games.

“It is very difficult to distinguish between games that contain violence and those that do not,” explained Sheinbaum.

The initiative also revealed other weaknesses. For example, it became unclear how to apply the tax to games distributed through subscriptions like Game Pass and PlayStation Plus.

As a result, the Mexican government decided instead of imposing restrictions on “violent” games, to conduct an informational campaign among young people promoting a “culture of peace.”
