Clair Obscur: The developer of Expedition 33, Sandfall, expresses that creating an expansion is not "tempting"
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, developed by Sandfall Interactive, achieved tremendous success, yet the studio has no plans for expansion.
In an interview with Edge, referenced in Future's Knowledge newsletter, co-founder Guillaume Broche shared that expanding the company isn't appealing, as he values game creation over managing a larger team.
Broche remarked, "I think it's good to have limitations when you are creative." He believes constraints lead to personal and professional fulfillment. Although financially capable of growing, Broche and his management prefer to remain involved directly in game development. Over the past five years, Broche found immense satisfaction in this approach and wishes to continue.
In discussing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's success, Broche emphasized the importance of building games around the team's strengths rather than rigid processes.
"We built our processes on the way we work, depending on the talents we had at our disposal," Broche explained. He believes success lies in making a game you genuinely want to play, focusing less on player expectations and more on creating something authentic. According to Broche, a game with a strong identity, even with minor imperfections, resonates well because of its sincerity.
Released in April, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has sold over 5 million copies worldwide and garnered widespread praise, including nine awards at The Game Awards. However, it was recently disqualified from The Indie Game Awards due to the use of generative AI content, which violates the competition's regulations.
