Ubisoft has purchased the forthcoming MOBA game March of Giants from Amazon Game Studios and has brought back a development team that previously worked at Ubisoft Montreal.

In a recent development, Ubisoft has secured ownership of the forthcoming MOBA game, March of Giants. This acquisition includes a development team based in Montreal, consisting of several seasoned developers who previously worked with Ubisoft. This team was acquired from the former owner, Amazon Game Studios.

This move comes on the heels of significant workforce reductions at Amazon as part of a broader corporate downsizing effort. The financial specifics of the acquisition remain undisclosed.

Leading the charge on March of Giants is Creative Director Xavier Marquis, known for his work on Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, alongside Senior Production Leader Alexandre Parizeau, who formerly led the Ubisoft Toronto studio. The team is set to integrate into one of Ubisoft's Creative Houses, which form part of Ubisoft’s ongoing strategic reorganization. This restructuring also saw the development of the Tencent-supported Vantage Studios to manage key franchises such as Assassin's Creed.

Introduced in September, March of Giants has successfully completed a closed alpha phase. Ubisoft disclosed in a statement that the team is preparing a major update including new giants, expanded competitive features, and foundational systems to support future growth. As part of the transaction, Amazon will extend marketing assistance to Ubisoft for March of Giants through Twitch.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot remarked, “March of Giants presents a unique opportunity to innovate in gaming, bolstering Ubisoft’s position in a competitive market. We’re thrilled to welcome Alexandre, Xavier, and their accomplished team back to Ubisoft. Their vision aligns with ours as we endeavor to craft exciting new gaming experiences.”

Creative Director Xavier Marquis commented, “Coming back to Ubisoft is like returning home. We’ve achieved significant milestones here, and we’re eager to further develop March of Giants with Ubisoft’s support. We believe in the game's potential and are confident that Ubisoft can elevate it further.”

Amazon's VP of Audio, Twitch and Games, Steve Boom, expressed pride in the Montreal team’s achievements with March of Giants and trusts that Ubisoft's leadership will foster continued success in the game's development.

This news aligns with Amazon’s October decision to cut 14,000 jobs across its broader business sectors. This restructuring aimed to align resources with the company's most promising ventures, leading to substantial job eliminations at its Irvine and San Diego studios. Consequently, one of Amazon's main projects, the MMO New World, announced it would no longer receive updates.

In October, Amazon launched the co-op party game King of Meat with a heavy marketing push involving a MrBeast collaboration and significant advertising efforts. However, the game did not meet expectations, which led to staff layoffs at developer Glowmade games earlier this month.
