Netflix has characterized the games division of Warner Bros as "relatively minor in the grand scheme of things"
Netflix, the well-known streaming service, has declared that it did not assign any "value" to the gaming division of Warner Bros as part of its intended acquisition of the company. This statement comes from Netflix’s co-CEO, president, and director, Gregory Peters, as noted by PocketGamer.biz. Peters expressed that Warner Bros could accelerate Netflix's own gaming initiatives.
Peters elaborated that while Warner Bros has achieved considerable success in gaming, Netflix did not initially consider it a major factor in its acquisition strategy. He stated his excitement about integrating successful franchises like Hogwarts into Netflix's offerings, citing their strong studios and talented staff as valuable assets. However, he clarified that this has not been factored into their acquisition's financial plans.
In terms of Netflix's gaming endeavors, Peters remarked on substantial investment in developing infrastructure and expanding its library of games. He highlighted the company's efforts to refine its strategies through consumer engagement and the discovery process. Netflix is keen to leverage its existing intellectual property (IP) to create immersive narrative games that resonate with its audience, such as creating deeper experiences in the Squid Games universe.
Peters mentioned that Netflix is a "very safe space for kids," underscoring the absence of advertisements and in-app purchases on its platform. The kids' gaming sector is another area of focus, offering secure play environments. Netflix has also explored distributing popular IPs like Grand Theft Auto and recently launched Red Dead Redemption, which has been a success on mobile platforms.
Moreover, Netflix is pioneering social gaming experiences, likening them to family game nights and interactive game shows. The company has introduced various TV games where players use their phones as controllers, including titles like Boggle, Pictionary, and LEGO games. Peters announced an upcoming quiz show game, Best Guess, which aims to blend the thrill of game shows with interactive elements.
Netflix has confirmed its intent to acquire Warner Bros, including its gaming sector, for $82.7 billion. Meanwhile, Paramount Skydance has initiated a hostile takeover for Warner Bros Discovery in its entirety.
