A newly established independent entity is addressing "transparency, accountability, and ethical reform" within the UK's gaming sector.

The UK Games Industry Shadow Council (UKGISC) has been formed by a community committed to action amidst perceived industry inaction, according to dialogue with GamesIndustry.biz. Although it was founded by gaming industry veteran Kim MacAskill, she is not a member of the council.

Phil Harris serves as the chairperson of this council, which boasts over 30 participants. However, there is hesitation among some members about revealing their participation.

"Several individuals involved with the UKGISC have experienced challenges within the industry," Harris noted.

"There is apprehension among members about making their involvement public due to possible backlash."

The UKGISC is committed to creating a forum for "highlighting commendable and problematic practices" in the gaming industry, referencing recent issues such as the layoffs at Build a Rocket Boy and Rockstar North.

To tackle these matters effectively, the UKGISC is divided into seven key committees:

  • Executive Core
  • Transparency and Accountability
  • Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, and Safeguarding (EDI & Safeguarding)
  • Industry Relations and Partnerships
  • Education and Research
  • Creative and Production
  • Technology and Innovation

Clarifying its position, the UKGISC emphasized that it does not operate as a union but seeks to comprehend the breadth of underlying issues present.

"Anything brought to our attention via the Shadow Council's email (shadowcouncilgamesuk@gmail.com) will be handled with confidentiality and respect."

Regarding handling concerns, the council stated: "We aim to advocate for sectors and individuals potentially overlooked, to paint a comprehensive picture, and to ensure accountability in feedback."

The UKGISC's mission will persist until the Creative Industries Independent Standards Authority (CIISA) assumes responsibility. The CIISA was initiated during the summertime to regulate ethical and governance norms across creative fields.

The initial focus of the CIISA will be on the film, television, theatre, and music industries, but the UKGISC anticipates a shift toward the gaming sector soon.

The UKGISC views a "significant opportunity" for its diverse panel, comprising educators, recruiters, business owners, and employees, to discern and communicate the industry's best and worst practices to the CIISA.

Furthermore, they expressed hopes of collaborating with established trade bodies in the sector, alongside the UK Video Games Council, to bolster job security for both workers and employers.

The UK Video Games Council was launched over the summer to "collaborate with the government" in advancing the growth and innovation of the nation's games and interactive entertainment sector.
