Roblox is starting to implement age verification through the use of facial age estimation technology

Roblox has initiated voluntary age verification for its chat function to "limit communication between minors and adults."

The verification process will utilize the Roblox app, applying facial age estimation technology powered by Persona. The company assures that any photos or videos will be "deleted immediately after processing."

Although age verification is currently not mandatory, users must complete it to access certain features, including chat capabilities. Following verification, users will be grouped by age into the following categories:

  • Under nine
  • Nine to 12
  • 13 to 15
  • 16 to 17
  • 18 to 20
  • 21 and older

Users will be allowed to communicate with peers within their own and similar age brackets as deemed suitable.

In early December, age checks will begin in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, with plans to extend globally to other regions by January of the following year.

As part of this rollout, verification will also be necessary for accessing social media links on user profiles, community pages, and experience details, according to Roblox.

"These new requirements will help us provide positive, age-appropriate experiences for all users on Roblox," the company stated.

"We encourage others in the industry to adopt our comprehensive approach to enhance online safety for children and teens."

Throughout the past year, Roblox has been enhancing its safety measures. A recent update introduced a "sensitive issues" content label within its experiences feature.

In November 2024, Roblox implemented further safety changes, restricting under-13 users from accessing direct messaging on the platform and controlling the type of messages they can send in games and experiences.

This article previously indicated that age verification would become mandatory in select countries before expanding globally, which has now been corrected.
