The Andrew Yoon Legend Award has been bestowed upon Pokémon by the New York Videogame Critics Circle (NYVGCC), marking it as the fifteenth recipient.
The NYVGCC commended Pokémon for its pivotal role in worldwide pop culture, highlighting the franchise's ability to resonate with both video game enthusiasts and the broader public from the late 1990s with its blend of collectability, accessible RPG gameplay, and distinct character designs.
This award is designated for industry figures and entities whose work reflects sustained artistic excellence and ingenuity. The award honors the memory of founding member Andrew Yoon. Previous honorees include notable figures such as Sam Lake, Neil Druckmann, Reggie Fils-Aimé, Phil Spencer, Tim Schafer, Jerry Lawson, Jade Raymond, Richard Garriott, Todd Howard, Ralph Baer, and Hideo Kojima.
Highlighting a robust $12 billion in global retail revenues in 2024, with more than 489 million copies of games sold since its inception in 1996, Pokémon stands as one of the top-earning franchises in the media world. It continues to expand its influence as newer generations engage with its video games, animated series, films, trading card games, and apps produced by The Pokémon Company.
"When discussing a cultural juggernaut like Pokémon, 'Legend' is the term that genuinely encapsulates its impact," stated Harold Goldberg, president and founder of NYVGCC. "Over a span of three decades, it has grown into the most distinctive game series globally, adored for its imaginative creature designs that have engaged players of all ages."
The award presentation will be a significant honor for the franchise at the 15th New York Game Awards ceremony.
Reggie Fils-Aimé, former Nintendo of America president and member of the NYVGCC, remarked, "The Pokémon Company has forged one of the most formidable franchises in gaming history. I have witnessed firsthand the passion behind each Pokémon game, which consistently resonated with its fanbase. Participating in this moment where Pokémon receives the Andrew Yoon Legend Award is truly fulfilling."
The event celebrating the legacy of this monumental franchise will take place at the New York Game Awards on January 18, 2026.
