How many games has Supercell "killed" and what lessons has the Finnish studio learned from dozens of discontinued projects
For seven years, Supercell has been unable to expand its catalog of evergreen hits. Squad Busters could have been a game-changer, but it too was recently shut down. Throughout its history, the company has "killed" dozens of games. The reasons and results of this approach are explored in a new comprehensive article.
Over its 15 years in the market, Supercell is known as a studio that doesn't hesitate to shut down projects at various stages. Thus, despite the regular launch of new titles into production, the Finnish company operates only five titles.
Yet, each one is a leader in its niche:
- Clash of Clans — over $10 billion (total revenue);
- Hay Day — over $2 billion;
- Boom Beach — over $1 billion;
- Clash Royale — $3.3 billion;
- Brawl Stars — over $2 billion.
The last one was released in 2018, and since then, Supercell hasn't been able to release another long-lasting project. As of 2023, CEO Ilkka Paananen noted that the company "killed" more than 30 games to launch these five.
Around 15 canceled games are publicly known. Today, we'll discuss them and also explore what lessons Supercell has learned from its mistakes and why it is willing to continue expanding its "graveyard."
