The Japan Patent Office has turned down Nintendo's application for a patent related to its Pokémon capture mechanism

In a recent development, Nintendo's attempt to patent a game mechanic akin to capturing characters or creatures, a feature prominent in Pokémon games, has hit a roadblock. The Japan Patent Office (JPO) is considering denying the application submitted by Nintendo last March, due to a challenge citing lack of novelty from existing games.

The report from Games Fray reveals that prior examples like ARK, Monster Hunter 4, Craftopia, Kantai Collection, and Pokémon Go have been cited as evidence against the uniqueness of Nintendo's patent claim.

While a final decision has not yet been made, it appears Nintendo may face pressure to revise its patent application. Although the outcome might not directly impact its current legal battle with Pocketpair, the developer of Palworld, it could have broader implications for related patents.

Previously, in September 2024, Nintendo pursued legal action against Pocketpair, accusing them of infringing on several patent rights through Palworld. Nintendo sought an injunction and financial compensation for alleged damages.

In contrast to this setback, last month, Nintendo did achieve a victory in the United States with the successful patenting of a gameplay feature that allows in-game characters to call on helpers in battles, as noted in a Games Industry report.
