"We Were Wrong": Supercell to Shut Down Squad Busters Two Years After Game's Release

Squad Busters will become the first game in Supercell’s history to be "killed" after a global release. Previously, the company dealt with unsuccessful projects at earlier stages.

Supercell decided to 'kill' Squad Busters

In an official blog post, Supercell announced that the final content update for Squad Busters will be released in December 2025. The mobile game will remain available for a while, but its servers will shut down sometime in 2026. Supercell cannot specify when exactly Squad Busters will cease to exist, but notes it will not be before June.

The Finnish developers explained that the release of Squad Busters was a lesson for Supercell. The game launched in May 2024 and initially performed well, but it soon became clear that it did not meet the expectations placed on it. By early 2025, the project team realized they either had to accept that Squad Busters would not become a hit or make significant gameplay changes. After weighing their options, Supercell chose the latter, but the game could still not be saved.

"At Supercell, we value the lessons learned from our failures. Squad Busters gave us the opportunity to apply some of these lessons — including those derived from extended beta testing of previous games. We wanted to move faster, take bold risks, and learn directly from a global audience instead of waiting several years in limited release. We realized we were wrong," said Supercell's statement.

Although Squad Busters fell short of Supercell's standards, it cannot be called a complete failure. Recall that in its first seven months, it earned over $100 million, and by May 2025, its downloads reached 60 million. Both metrics should be higher now, but Supercell has not shared updated figures.

The Squad Busters team will be distributed among other projects. Some developers will join the teams of Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars, and other existing Supercell titles, while others will work on new games.
