Warner Bros. has approved a continuation of A Minecraft Movie, with a release date set for July 23, 2027. Jared Hess will once again helm the project, sharing screenplay duties with Chris Galletta, according to a report by Variety.

Although details about the plot and cast remain under wraps, production will involve Jason Momoa, Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, and Torfi Frans Ólafsson.

The original Minecraft film, which debuted earlier this year, had an impressive run, generating $157 million domestically and $301 million globally within its initial weekend, as detailed by GamesIndustry.biz. This surpassed Warner Bros.' forecast of $70 million to $80 million, given the $150 million production budget.

Closing its premiere month by racking up $550 million worldwide, it eventually concluded with $957 million in overall box office receipts. As the second top-earning film of 2025, it trailed only behind Disney's Lilo and Stitch remake, which brought in $1.03 billion.

Research from Ampere Analysis indicated a 30% increase in Minecraft's monthly active user base in April, concurrent with the film's debut, with lapsed players making up 54% of this growth according to a report.

GamesIndustry.biz also consulted with industry specialists, exploring the potential ripple effect on Hollywood from the film's triumph, suggesting that video game adaptations might become more widespread in the film industry. Further insights are shared in their discussion on this topic here.
