Ex-ZeniMax Online developers establish Sackbird Studios

Several former developers from ZeniMax Online have come together to launch Sackbird Studios.

The new independent studio, which is self-funded and employee-owned, is comprised of fewer than ten individuals who previously contributed to Elder Scrolls Online and the extensive MMO project known as Project Blackbird.

Although the studio has not yet revealed its debut game, it has confirmed working on an "original project" for both PC and console platforms.

CEO Lee Ridout expressed appreciation for the experience gained at ZeniMax Online Studios, highlighting its significant impact on their growth as developers and individuals. Ridout commented, "When Blackbird was canceled and job losses ensued, it motivated us to protect our craft and team by founding a studio where creative freedom is paramount."

COO David Worley stated, "Our years in AAA gaming inspired a desire for the liberty to make calculated risks without the need for external approval or the pressure of meeting quarterly goals."

Worley added, "With full employee ownership and funding, our accountability lies solely with those passionate about gaming."

Earlier in the year, Microsoft implemented significant layoffs in its gaming sector, impacting over 9,000 employees. This restructuring affected ZeniMax Online Studios, led to the shutdown of The Initiative, and resulted in the discontinuation of the Perfect Dark reboot. Additionally, Rare's Everwild was canceled, and Turn 10, the developer of Forza Motorsport, saw its workforce halved.
