Starbreeze canceled a D&D game, which cost them $27 million
Starbreeze announced the cancellation of Project Baxter, a cooperative game set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. The company decided to write off the development costs and lay off some developers.
The capitalized costs for developing Project Baxter amounted to 255 million Swedish kronor ($27.3 million). To put this in perspective, Starbreeze’s revenue for the entire year of 2024 was lower, at 185.9 million Swedish kronor ($19.9 million).
Regarding the layoffs, Starbreeze will part ways with a total of 44 permanent and freelance employees.
According to Starbreeze, this decision was difficult but necessary. The company now plans to focus on developing the PAYDAY franchise and actively engaging in its related games. Specifically, the PAYDAY 3 team will be expanded to 50 members by the end of the year.
