Social justice advocacy organizations criticize Roblox for "suppressing crucial voices" through its implementation of new parental controls
Latest update as of Wednesday, October 1, 2025: Roblox has addressed an open letter from three advocacy groups in the gaming industry. The groups had expressed concerns about new parental controls and content ratings, but Roblox emphasized that these affect only a small portion of the platform's offerings and aim to assist parents in making informed choices.
"We prioritize creativity and freedom on Roblox," remarked a company spokesperson in a statement given to GamesIndustry.biz. "Understanding that families differ in their discussions on various topics, we aim to support parents in deciding suitable content for their children."
According to Roblox, the new policy ensures that content related to certain topics is not automatically accessible to children under 13, while allowing parents to enable such content through controls. Roblox asserts this adjustment impacts a limited number of experiences, empowering parents to make decisions best suited for their family.
Initial report: Three organizations, Out Making Games (OMG), Women in Games (WIG), and BAME in Games (BiG), have collectively penned an open letter asking Roblox to rethink its recent "sensitive issues" guidelines. The groups claim these measures could hinder creative expression and social justice developments.
In August, Roblox informed developers about a new "content descriptor and parental control" for experiences touching on sensitive social, political, or religious issues, including with themes meant to elicit strong emotional reactions or polarized views. The company explained this is intended to provide parents the decision on how and when their children under 13 can engage with such topics.
OMG, WIG, and BiG expressed concerns that these guidelines might disrupt the progressive and inclusive community that has prospered on the platform since 2006, potentially injuring marginalized societal groups. The guidelines list topics like immigration, capital punishment, gun control, marriage equality, and more as subjects needing these descriptors. They argue that by labeling human rights and equality as "sensitive," Roblox unintentionally suggests these matters are debatable.
The groups advocate for protecting children online, notably girls who face higher levels of harassment. However, they believe silencing content that informs and empowers is not the approach. Topics like equal pay and gender equality are crucial to women's experiences, and marking them as "sensitive" might limit essential representation and education.
"Suppressing these discussions doesn't result in safety but silence," the letter stated, warning that it could discourage young women from full participation and perpetuate negative stereotypes. The initiative's neutrality might also trivialize systemic racism by positioning discriminatory policies alongside those intended to counter it.
OMG, WIG, and BiG contend that while parental controls are valuable, they should not sacrifice fundamental human dignity. They urge Roblox to re-evaluate the guidelines, aiming to protect younger audiences without endorsing discrimination or quieting significant conversations.
The joint statement concluded by recognizing Roblox's achievements over the past two decades, cautioning that its legacy could be jeopardized by policies that inadvertently perpetuate the very inequalities creativity has the power to contest.
