The release of Borderlands 4 for the Switch 2 has been postponed as developers require "additional development and polish time" to ensure its quality.

Gearbox Software has announced that the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 is facing an indefinite postponement. Originally slated for release on October 3, the company revealed that additional time is required for "development and polish" to ensure the game's high quality for players.
This challenging decision, explained in a social media statement, also aligns with efforts to introduce cross-save functionality—a feature Gearbox acknowledges as critical.
Future announcements on the "release timing" of Borderlands 4 will follow once Gearbox finalizes its adjusted roadmap.
For now, digital pre-orders on the Switch 2 will automatically initiate cancellation starting September 26. Gearbox suggests that customers may already begin this process on the Nintendo eShop. Those holding physical pre-orders should directly reach out to their purchase locations.
Since its debut on September 12, Borderlands 4 has faced criticism for its PC performance. Reviews on Steam highlight difficulties with optimization, crashes, and overall technical issues, resulting in a mixed reception.
In defense, CEO Randy Pitchford remarked that the game's performance is "pretty damn optimal," urging players to adjust their settings to suit their preferences using the existing options.
In comments posted on X, he clarified that demanding all features including ultra settings at high frame rates may not be feasible for systems at or below recommended specs.
Despite technical grumbles, the game has attracted over 2.5 million players, generating more than $150 million, according to Alinea Analytics.
