The director of the live-action film adaptation of Death Stranding has stated that the movie will present an entirely new narrative set within the game's universe.

Michael Sarnoski, director of the live-action film for A24's Death Stranding, aims to introduce audiences to "another story that you've never seen in this same universe." Sarnoski discussed his approach during the Beyond the Strand 10th anniversary event hosted by Kojima Productions on September 23, 2025. Joining him were Kojima and A24's co-head Sam Hanson.
Reflecting on his journey, Sarnoski, renowned for his work on A Quiet Place: Day One, stated, "Taking on this project was both an honor and terrifying, especially after the scale of A Quiet Place. Meeting Kojima-san and the team at A24 showed me the creative freedom I'd have."
The film promises an original narrative within the Death Stranding universe, expanding on the game's themes while introducing entirely new characters and stories. Sarnoski emphasized the importance of creating something accessible to new audiences while offering depth to long-time fans.
Kojima emphasized that the film will not condense the expansive experience of the game into a brief runtime. "It's crucial to tell a unique story that explores Death Stranding's world independently," he noted, adding his trust in Sarnoski to helm this vision.
Further announcements included the reveal of Death Stranding: Mosquito, an animated movie with Aaron Guzikowski as screenwriter and Hiroshi Miyamoto from ABC Animation Studio as director. Miyamoto hinted the working title reflects the main character's unique powers.
Additionally, Kojima Productions revealed several new projects: an AR initiative with Niantic Spatial, a teaser for the new project 'OD: Knock,' and unveiled cast and poster art for the stealth game Physint.
