Tanglewood Games urges increased backing for creating game hubs in the North and throughout the UK
Update, September 17, 2025: Game Republic has thrown its support behind Tanglewood Games' appeal for enhanced support to foster game development centers in the north of England.
In a statement shared with GamesIndustry.biz, Game Republic expressed its full support for Tanglewood Games' stance on bolstering the gaming industry, particularly in regions such as Hartlepool and the North East.
Jamie Sefton, managing director of Game Republic, commented, "In The North, we are fortunate to have Game Republic and many regional meet-ups and hubs that cooperate and collaborate."
"Our efforts extend across UK regions, acknowledging that the bulk of game creations originate outside of London and the South East. We firmly believe in the importance of devolved funding and support for regional gaming hubs."
"Our sentiments align closely with Tanglewood's CEO, Chris Wood, which is why we are spearheading initiatives to address these challenges. We are eager to collaborate with Tanglewood Games to advance these efforts, which should be led by companies and networks in the North."
Chris Wood shared, "As a company proud of our Northern roots in Hartlepool, we are excited to work with Jamie, Game Republic, and One Creative North on their remarkable initiatives aimed at helping underprivileged individuals enter the games industry and enhance funding access for the North."
Original story, September 16, 2025: Tanglewood Games seeks increased governmental aid to enhance and broaden gaming development hubs throughout the UK.
Recently, Tanglewood, an Unreal Engine consultancy and development studio, teamed up with Into Games for the Waypoint summit to discuss social mobility challenges for games businesses in the North East. Meetings were also held with Ukie and Hartlepool MP Jonathan Brash, focusing on developing areas like Hartlepool into thriving hubs.
According to a press statement from Tanglewood, "Game hubs in the UK are critical to local economies, generating employment and global innovation. However, industry entry is often hindered by insufficient investment and skill shortages, exacerbated by socio-economic disparities."
Chris Wood, CEO of Tanglewood Games, stated, "Coming from a working-class background, I am aware that talent isn't exclusive to major cities. Tanglewood Games advocates for well-defined industry entry pathways beginning in schools and universities, along with funding like mentorships, bursaries, and infrastructure, achieved via collaboration with government and regional bodies to cultivate local talent."
"Our goal is to ensure everyone, regardless of background, feels they have a viable path into the industry and receives adequate support once they are there."
Ukie is actively coordinating with the Government’s Social Mobility Commission to explore methods for the games industry to overcome socio-economic hurdles for British developers and businesses. MP Jonathan Brash stated, "My role is to support [Tanglewood Games'] efforts through ongoing investments in pivotal areas vital to advancing this industry."
Earlier today, it was reported that the trade body TIGA is advocating for stronger tax incentives to aid the UK games sector.
