Production for Amazon's adaptation of "Tomb Raider" is set to commence in January 2026, with Sophie Turner taking on the role of Lara Croft

Filming for Amazon's new Tomb Raider series is set to commence on January 19, 2026. Sophie Turner is confirmed to take on the iconic role of Lara Croft.

According to Variety, the series is spearheaded by Phoebe Waller-Bridge in collaboration with Chad Hodge, the mind behind Wayward Pines. Waller-Bridge takes on multiple roles as the creator, writer, and executive producer.

Jonathan van Tulleken, known for his work on Shōgun, will direct and also serve as an executive producer on the project.

Waller-Bridge commented, "Announcing Sophie Turner as our Lara is a thrilling moment. Our entire team shares a deep passion for the character and the project’s grand scale."

Turner expressed her excitement, stating: "Playing Lara Croft is an extraordinary opportunity. The character holds significant meaning for many, and I am fully committed. Following the brilliant portrayals by Angelina [Jolie] and Alicia [Vikander] is daunting, but with Phoebe leading, we are in excellent hands."

The Tomb Raider series was officially approved by Amazon MGM Studios in May 2024, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz. Crystal Dynamics will join as a producer and executive producer, alongside Story Kitchen and Wells Street Productions, Waller-Bridge’s company.
