Main events from the weekend (August 30-31)

Steam introduced a return verification process for users from the United Kingdom, Blizzard Entertainment filed a lawsuit against creators of unofficial World of Warcraft servers, and the Gears of War: Reloaded audience surpassed one million players. We outline the main events in the gaming industry over the past weekend.

  • Valve reported that UK residents who wish to access adult games on Steam must now verify their age. British gamers can prove they are over 18 by linking a credit card to their account. Valve explained that these measures are necessary to comply with the UK's online safety law. The regulations do not apply to Steam users from other countries.
  • Blizzard Entertainment filed a lawsuit against the creators of Turtle WoW, unofficial World of Warcraft servers that host fan-made content like Mysteries of Azeroth. According to the company, they infringed on copyrights and unlawfully used its art, trademarks, and code. In a statement to the media, Blizzard Entertainment added that it was forced to go to court due to the "scale and nature of the violations," aiming to "protect the world it created."
  • The Coalition announced that more than a million people worldwide have played the remaster of the first Gears of War. The developers did not specify how many purchased the game versus how many played via Game Pass subscription. It took three days from the release on August 26 for Gears of War: Reloaded to hit the million-player mark on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series.
  • The developers from FireFly Studios reported strong sales for Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition. The strategy game sold over 300,000 copies in a month and a half. The game is available exclusively on PC.
  • Hollow Knight continues to set online records on Steam ahead of the release of Hollow Knight: Silksong. According to SteamDB, on August 31, the number of concurrent players in the Steam version of the metroidvania reached 70,225. For comparison, just a week ago, the maximum online player count for Hollow Knight on Steam was 39,356 players. The sequel is set to be released this Thursday, September 4, on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.
