After much anticipation, Team Cherry has set September 4, 2025, as the release date for Hollow Knight: Silksong.

In an interview with Bloomberg, the indie game studio from Australia disclosed that Hollow Knight, released in 2017, has achieved sales of 15 million copies.

While discussing the extended development period, co-founders Ari Gibson and William Pellen mentioned that being a small team, creating games is time-consuming, but they were enjoying the process.

Gibson stated, "The project has always been a medium for our imaginative expression. Progress was consistent, and no significant setbacks occurred. Rather, as a small team, extensive time is necessary for game development. There wasn't any dramatic incident causing delays."

Originally, Silksong was planned as an expansion of Hollow Knight. However, as its scope increased, Team Cherry opted to develop it into a standalone sequel.

Gibson elaborated, "We soon realized it would evolve into something substantial, potentially surpassing the original game. Given our approach, the game's environment grew comparably large, featuring multiple towns and an expansive quest system, extending the development timeline."

Pellen remarked: "The creation process involved continuously developing fresh concepts and elements. Finishing the game is why we're concluding the development, even though expanding it further was tempting."

Regarding their communication strategy, Gibson mentioned that frequent updates might have led to disillusionment as the main message would simply have been that development was ongoing.

The team also wished to retain the element of surprise for gamers.

Pellen commented, "We believed our duty was towards advancing the project, rather than offering updates with no significant news."

Gibson added, "We often underestimate the effort and time needed for completion. Enjoying the development experience, we didn't feel pressured by delays, but rather inspired to continue exploring new ideas."
