German officials have formally inaugurated Gamescom 2025
The official kickoff of Gamescom occurred on August 20, 2025, with prominent German politicians underscoring the significance of the event and the gaming sector.
Key attendees included Dorothee Bär, Germany's federal minister overseeing video games; Hendrik Wüst, the minister-president of North Rhine-Westphalia; and Henriette Reker, who serves as mayor of Cologne and chairs the supervisory board of Koelnmesse.
The speakers, during their addresses, stressed the strategic objective for Germany to establish itself as a global leader in the gaming industry. They emphasized the event's role in demonstrating the sector's cultural, economic, and technological capacities.
Minister Bär remarked on the industry's potential, showcased annually at Gamescom, asserting the need for Germany to enhance its competitive edge globally. She announced a substantial increase in funding as an initial measure, with future plans to incorporate tax incentives similar to those in other nations.
Wüst highlighted North Rhine-Westphalia's status as a pivotal region for gaming, citing its top-tier developer studios and Gamescom's continued presence as a testament to the area's innovation. He elaborated on new guidelines aimed at nurturing small and emerging projects to support a dynamic gaming ecosystem, complementing national initiatives. This, he noted, signifies a pivotal shift in the government's dedication to the gaming industry.
