Rod Fergusson, who has been at the helm of the Diablo series, has announced his decision to depart from Blizzard.

On social media, Fergusson revealed, "it's time for me to step away [...] and see what's next."

Reflecting on his time at Blizzard, Fergusson stated, "After five years of leading the Diablo franchise with four major releases, it's time for me to exit Blizzard/Microsoft and explore new opportunities, sword in hand."

He expressed confidence in the teams, highlighting that they are well-equipped for future success, with many promising projects on the horizon. Fergusson shared his pride in the accomplishments they've achieved and his anticipation for what's to come both for him and the Diablo series.

Senior figures at Microsoft and Blizzard such as Blizzard president Johanna Faries and Xbox head Phil Spencer reacted to Fergusson's decision.

Faries commented, acknowledging Fergusson's unique skills and collaboration, stating, "Guiding a franchise like Diablo takes rare talent, vision, and collaboration. Thank you, Rod, for bringing all of those in spades. Sanctuary's future is brighter because of the impact you've had."

Spencer noted: "You brought strength, hellfire, and vision to one of gaming's most iconic franchises. Playing Diablo 4 with you was a blast – thanks for everything you gave to the game and the community."

The news was also verified by Blizzard to IGN, though they did not disclose who will succeed Fergusson in his role.

Fergusson became part of Blizzard in 2020, soon after Diablo 4 was publicized. He is widely recognized for his contributions to the Gears of War series, being an integral part of its development since its inception in 2006.

He previously led The Coalition, originally established in 2010 as Zipline Studios. After Microsoft's acquisition of Gears of War in 2014, the studio, then known as Black Tusk Studios, was renamed The Coalition.

Xbox's Matt Booty remarked to GamesIndustry.biz that Fergusson had made a significant impact on the Gears of War franchise when he transitioned to Blizzard.

"We are really grateful for the craft and his passion, and also what he has done to build that community," said Booty. "We wish him well as he moves on."
