Ludocene, a complimentary app designed to pair users with video games rather than potential partners, has officially gone live following a successful Kickstarter initiative.
The app, devised by independent video game journalist Andy Robertson, functions as a deck-builder, offering game suggestions based on user preferences. More information can be found at Ludocene's website.
After registering on the platform, users can start a "new run" and decide if they want a "starter pack" that emphasizes the platform's suggestions, introduces new upcoming titles, or highlights recent finds.
Users are shown Game cards on a dating app-style interface, detailing various game options from diverse developers.
Each card can be swiped to either save the game for later play or indicate if they have previously enjoyed or disliked it. These actions help the app curate a customized deck of game recommendations.
Besides Game cards, the app displays Expert cards featuring curated recommendations from professionals like streamers, developers, journalists, and podcasters. Favoriting these cards tailors recommendations to match both their and the user's tastes.
Featured experts include individuals like James Batchelor from GamesIndustry.biz, Christian Donlan from Eurogamer, Matthew Castle from Backpage Podcast, and Shut Up and Sit Down's Matt Lees.
Though the app is accessible for free, users can opt for a £3 / $4 subscription, unlocking access to more experts and special card decks.
Ludocene's Kickstarter campaign succeeded in March, gathering £35.2K / $46.8K, which exceeded its original £26.3K / $35K target by nearly £10K / $13.3K.
Future developments aim to include better notifications, board game discovery features, and the creation of a Ludocene podcast.
Andy Robertson stated in a Bluesky post on August 6, "If you want a better way to find amazing games that rewards experts and is in the hands of players, this is our shot."
He expressed gratitude to the numerous backers and mentioned, "This is just the beginning."
