Ludocene, a new app focused on game discovery, has been launched

A unique "dating app" called Ludocene is now available, designed to pair users with video games instead of people. The app's launch follows a Kickstarter campaign that surpassed its initial funding goals.

The brainchild of Andy Robertson, a freelance video game journalist, Ludocene functions as a deck-building platform that suggests games based on the user's preferences.

When users join the web application, they embark on a "new run" where they can opt for a "starter pack." This pack gives precedence to the app's suggestions, trending games, or novel discoveries.

Similar to a dating app, users are shown Game cards that contain details about various games ranging from indie creations to major releases.

Users swipe the Game cards in various directions to either save them for later or indicate if they've played and liked or disliked a particular game. This interactive action helps the app tailor game recommendations more precisely.

Beyond Game cards, Ludocene offers Expert cards, which feature insights from professionals such as streamers, developers, journalists, and podcasters. By interacting with these cards, users can align their recommendations with the experts' choices.

The list of experts includes notable figures like James Batchelor from GamesIndustry.biz, Christian Donlan of Eurogamer, Matthew Castle from Backpage Podcast, and Matt Lees from Shut Up and Sit Down.

The app, free for users, also offers a £3 / $4 subscription option. This premium service unlocks a deeper array of expert recommendations and unique card sets.

Ludocene's Kickstarter, completed in March, garnered £35.2K / $46.8K in pledges, significantly exceeding its £26.3K / $35K target.

Additional goals for the app include advanced notification features, board game discovery capabilities, and a podcast launch.

In a Bluesky post on August 6, Robertson expressed gratitude, stating, "If you want a better way to find amazing games that rewards experts and is in the hands of players, this is our shot." He thanked the thousands of supporters, emphasizing that this is only the beginning.
