Weekend highlights (August 2-3)
Here's a brief overview of the main topics over the weekend: the THQ Nordic presentation, the million sales of A Game About Digging A Hole, and the price increase of old Switch models in the US.
- The main topic of discussion over the weekend was the THQ Nordic presentation, which showcased an extensive roster of upcoming products. The company's major win was not only presenting the projects that were anticipated (mainly, Gothic Remake and REANIMAL from the creators of the first two parts of Little Nightmares), but also surprising everyone by launching Titan Quest 2 in early access, announcing a Sacred 2 remaster, confirming the development of Darksiders 4, and unveiling Gatekeeper, the spiritual successor to Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.
- While not entirely new, this news hasn't been widely publicized earlier. A game aptly named A Game About Digging A Hole sold a million copies. In this game, players dig a hole on a plot, mine ore, and spend it on inventory upgrades to dig even deeper. This project was created by a single developer in less than a month. It was released for $5 on Steam in early February. With such sales, it can now comfortably be called a hit. Incidentally, it recently launched on iOS and Android.
- On Sunday, Nintendo officially raised the price of all their old Switch device lines in the US. The price of the Nintendo Switch increased by 13.3%, the Switch OLED by 14.3%, and the Switch Lite by a whopping 15% to $339.99, $399.99, and $229.99, respectively. The official reason given was "market conditions." It is noteworthy that Nintendo manufactures consoles in Vietnam, and all exports from Vietnam to the US have recently been subjected to a 20% tariff by order of Donald Trump.
