A recent report reveals that digital downloads now represent 70% of video game purchases in Germany, according to the German Games Industry Association's findings, which were based on YouGov data and released on July 29.

The report indicates an 8% rise in digital download share from 60% to 68% in 2024, establishing a new peak, while purchases in physical format account for 32%.

The analysis shows that almost all PC games in Germany, about 99%, were purchased digitally in 2024. Digital purchases for consoles also increased, reaching 44% in 2024 from 40% in 2023.

Nevertheless, most console games are still bought physically, with such purchases representing 56% of the market.

The shift towards digital downloads is attributed to a surge in digital-exclusive games, according to the report.

Baldur's Gate and Enshrouded are highlighted as popular titles that contributed to this trend through digital-only or early access releases.

Felix Falk, the association's managing director, stated that digital game downloads are increasingly favored over traditional physical media. This trend is evident as indie, blockbuster, and early access games are frequently sold digitally. However, many console gamers still prefer physical versions for their uniqueness, like special editions.

Falk also noted that age affects whether consumers choose digital or physical formats for game purchases.

Young adults aged 20 to 29 downloaded 77% of their PC and console games digitally. Meanwhile, players aged 50 to 59 are more inclined to purchase physical copies, comprising 47% of the market for these items in 2024—a 6% increase from the previous year.

The German gaming sector has experienced a contraction, with a 4% reduction in the number of game companies by 2025 after experiencing growth in previous years. Additionally, total sales revenue from games, gaming hardware, and online services decreased by 6% from 2023 to 2024.

The report highlights declines of 17% in game purchases for mobile, PC, and console platforms, and a 10% decrease in hardware sales. Conversely, there was a 12% uptick in revenue from online gaming services since 2023.
