The number of web browser games has increased to 4.9 times the amount available in 2023
Recent findings indicate a significant rise in web browser games, increasing 4.9 times over the past two years. During the second quarter of 2025 alone, over 15,000 new games debuted.
The data originates from a report by HTML5 games distributor Playgama, published on July 29. This analysis explored the popular game engines and technological trends shaping the evolution of web gaming.
Playgama's study shows that the first half of 2025 saw the release of more than 15,000 browser games. This figure represents a 2.7-fold increase over the same timeframe in 2024 and is 4.9 times greater than in the first half of 2023. The total surpasses the web browser game count from 2021 to 2023 combined.
The report highlights Unity as the dominant engine in web-based gaming, with a 55% share of new releases in Q2 2025. Nonetheless, other engines like Phaser, LayaAir, and Cocos are gaining ground. Notably, the no-code engine Construct grew its market presence from 13.7% in early 2024 to 16.4% in 2025.

The report by Playgama attributes the web gaming boom to the saturation of traditional gaming markets like mobile, PC, and console, along with the rising costs of developing AAA games for these platforms.
"Web games are becoming increasingly popular," stated Dmitry Kachmar, Playgama's founder. He noted that mobile devices and tablets are now almost as powerful as average laptops, allowing complex 3D games to run directly in browsers. Kachmar also projected that by 2030, AI advancements could enable over half of all games to be developed on cross-platform engines with effortless web exporting capabilities. This would position every screen as a potential gaming device, liberating game distribution from app stores. Cross-platform game engines are poised to be at the forefront, extending beyond their niche in browser gaming."
