The number of web browser games has surged, now reaching 4.9 times the amount recorded in 2023
A recent analysis highlights a significant growth in web browser games, showing a 4.9-fold increase over the last two years. In the second quarter of 2025 alone, over 15,000 new games became available.
This information stems from a report published on July 29 by the HTML5 games distributor, Playgama. The report reviews popular game engines, the volume of games developed using various technologies, and forecasts the development stacks influencing the future of web gaming.
Data from Playgama indicates that during the first half of 2025, over 15,000 web browser games were launched, showing a 2.7-fold rise compared to the same timeframe in 2024. This figure is 4.9 times higher than in the first half of 2023 and surpasses combined releases from 2021 to 2023.
The report also reveals Unity's dominance in web-based game development, contributing to 55% of new games in Q2 2025. Nevertheless, there is a noticeable increase in the use of more accessible engines like Phaser, LayaAir, and Cocos. The no-code engine Construct also saw its market share grow from 13.7% in early 2024 to 16.4% in the equivalent period of 2025.

The report suggests that this surge in web gaming is influenced by the saturated state of mobile, PC, and console markets, coupled with escalating costs for developing AAA games on console or PC.
Dmitry Kachmar, founder of Playgama, stated, "Web games are becoming increasingly popular: the processing power of mobile devices and tablets nearly matches typical laptops', enabling comprehensive 3D games to operate within browsers thanks to cutting-edge technologies."
He added, "With AI integration, cross-platform engines might create over half of all games by 2030, facilitating instant web export as a standard. As every screen becomes a gaming platform without app store limitations, cross-platform engines will transcend being just tools for browser games."
