Nearly five years following its initial announcement, Netflix is progressing with the development of a live-action TV series based on Assassin's Creed

Netflix has approved the production of a live-action television adaptation of the Assassin's Creed series.

Almost five years after Ubisoft and Netflix first agreed to collaborate on an Assassin's Creed series as part of a broader content partnership, the project is moving forward under the guidance of show creators Robert Patino and David Wiener, who will serve as showrunners and executive producers. Patino is known for his work on "Westworld" and "DMZ," while Wiener has contributed to "Halo" and "Homecoming".

Details regarding the specific game, characters, or historical era that the series will cover remain undisclosed. However, it is clear that the central conflict between the templars and assassins, a recurring theme in the games, will play a significant role in the storyline.

Ubisoft described the series as an intense thriller focused on the clandestine battle between two enigmatic groups: one aiming to control humanity's future, and the other defending the concept of free will.

The narrative will follow characters through significant points in history as they influence human destiny, as stated by the publisher.

Ubisoft's Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, and Austin Dill will also serve as executive producers on the project.

In a joint statement, Wiener and Patino highlighted the show's exploration of broader human themes: "Beneath the scope, the spectacle, the parkour, and the thrills is a baseline for the most essential kind of human story – about people searching for purpose, struggling with questions of identity and destiny and faith," they stated. "It is about power and violence and sex and greed and vengeance. But more than anything, this is a show about the value of human connection, across cultures, across time."

The latest entry in the franchise, Assassin's Creed Shadows, debuted earlier this year and received generally favorable reviews. The Assassin's Creed series has sold over 200 million copies throughout its history.

An earlier attempt to create a live-action rendition was the 2018 Assassin's Creed film featuring Michael Fassbender, which received negative feedback but grossed $240.7 million globally.
