Roblox has launched a new licensing platform designed to streamline the process for creators to obtain licenses for various intellectual properties, eliminating lengthy negotiations typical in game-related IP agreements.

Companies like Sega, Netflix, Lionsgate, and Kodansha have already partnered with the platform, and Roblox plans to bring more IP holders onboard soon.

Sega's "Like A Dragon" series is included, while Netflix licenses "Squid Game" and "Stranger Things." Lionsgate contributes movie series such as "Divergent," "Now You See Me," "Saw," and "Twilight." Kodansha will soon introduce two of its manga series to the platform.

The Roblox License Manager and the Licenses catalogue are pivotal elements of this platform, intended to facilitate large-scale media licensing. The platform allows IP holders to integrate their properties into new digital experiences.

Through the License Manager, rights holders can set licensing terms, determine content maturity levels, and manage revenue distribution. They have the flexibility to specify revenue sharing agreements or provide licenses more broadly, along with the ability to monitor how their IPs are utilized across existing content.

Developers have the opportunity to explore and apply for licenses within the catalogue.

According to Game Developer, each license has its own terms and revenue distribution model. For instance, Sega retains 50% of Robux earnings for the "Like A Dragon" license after platform fees, with a requirement for creators to maintain a minimum of 1,000 daily active users.

The licensing agreements for titles like "Like A Dragon" necessitate adherence to the original storyline and characters, preventing unrestricted usage.

Creators using Netflix's licenses, however, have no minimum user threshold, but only receive 15% of the Robux revenue generated by their content.

Roblox's strategy with this initiative is to ensure approximately 10% of gaming content revenue is processed through its system. It is actively exploring the inclusion of additional licenses and license types.
