Apple is challenging a "unprecedented" $568 million fine imposed by the European Union

Apple intends to challenge a $568.6 million (€500m) penalty imposed by the European Union.

The penalty was issued because Apple was found to have breached EU regulations by restricting App Store applications from directing users to alternative payment methods outside its platform, effectively requiring developers to pay a 30% commission to Apple.

In response to the EU's Digital Markets Act, Apple made adjustments to its App Store terms in the European Union. However, according to a report by The Guardian, Apple is appealing the decision, criticizing the alterations as "confusing."

Apple stated, "Our appeal is based on the belief that the European Commission’s decision and the substantial fine imposed exceed legal requirements," as they proceed to bring their case before the EU's general court.

The company argues that the EU's measures dictate operational aspects of their marketplace, leading to unclear conditions for both developers and users.

A representative from the European Commission commented to The Guardian, affirming their preparedness to uphold their rulings in court.

In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority concluded its examination of Apple's in-app payment practices in August. Meanwhile, Apple revised its policies in Europe to allow developers to link to external payments, but the European Commission maintained that Apple's actions violated its obligations under the DMA.
