Valve has restricted a mod for Mount and Blade: Warband in South Korea at the request of the government
In South Korea, Valve has prohibited a mod for the game Mount and Blade: Warband, and the developer has since taken it down.
According to a report by the South Korean website This Is Game, translated by Automaton, the Gwangju Running Man mod altered the game’s medieval environment to reflect a "modern interpretation of Korea's Gwangju Democratisation Movement" from 1980.
In March 2025, the Game Rating and Administration Committee (GRAC) in South Korea alerted Valve about the mod, citing a breach of local regulations. As a reaction, Valve restricted the mod within the country.
The creator decided to remove the mod last month after these developments.
GRAC accused the mod of "misrepresenting historical facts." Automaton explained that during the Gwangju Democratisation Movement, protests were "reportedly suppressed violently by the military, leading to civilian deaths."
However, the mod portrayed the protestors as "armed and violent" individuals, based on reports from the South Korean news source YNA, and suggested the military’s actions were justified.
The mod also featured an image of the military leader Chun Doo Hwan on its cover.
In light of the prohibition, Valve stated its understanding of the "significance of this historical event for the Korean populace."
