Ubisoft Halifax developers have submitted a request to form a union

Employees at Ubisoft Halifax, the team behind mobile titles such as Rainbow Six Mobile and Assassin's Creed Rebellion, have initiated a unionization effort with CWA Canada.

According to the announcement on CWA Canada's official site (reported by Game Developer), the unionization move was filed with the Nova Scotia Labour Board on June 18, 2025.

Staff members from various divisions will collectively form a comprehensive bargaining entity after a confidential vote and subsequent certification.

The workers at Ubisoft Halifax are pursuing this course of action due to the current unstable climate within the gaming industry.

"Forming a union with my colleagues at Ubisoft Halifax is crucial for safeguarding our present benefits and advocating for our future," remarked Thomas Gillis, a senior server programmer at the company.

He emphasized, "Amid the ongoing industry volatility and the closure of well-loved game studios, it falls on us, the workforce, to organize and push for influence over our work, artistry, and future direction."

CWA Canada boasts a membership of 6,000 across different media sectors, which includes professionals in journalism, game development, and digital media, as well as nearly 120 members from BGS-Microsoft in Montreal.

A statement endorsed by 39 staff members, from the studio's close to 60-person team, elaborates on their stance.

The statement notes, "In today’s landscape of pervasive uncertainty, studio shutdowns, layoffs, and mounting instability, our intent is to affirm our dedication to our peers and our work."

It continues, "We understand that creativity thrives when employees are assured of their stability and feel empowered. Our initiative to unionize is not against Ubisoft but rather in collaboration, aiming to preserve our studio as a hallmark of fairness, outstanding quality, and innovation."

"The formation of this union provides us, the employees, with a significant voice in critical discussions, enabling us to influence the future direction of Ubisoft Halifax and the broader industry. Together, we aim to create enduring experiences for players and cultivate a modern, considerate, and robust workplace for all involved."
