The main events over the weekend (June 12-15)
According to media reports, Tencent has shown interest in purchasing Nexon, the current generation of PlayStation consoles has become the most profitable in Sony's history, and the audience for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has reached 7 million people. Here's a summary of the main events in the gaming industry over the past weekend.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2
- Tencent wants to buy the South Korean holding company Nexon, sources told Bloomberg. It is claimed that the Chinese giant approached the heirs of the late Nexon founder, Kim Jung-ju, with this proposal — they own 67.7% of the holding's shares. While nothing has been agreed upon yet, if the deal goes through, it will be significant. Nexon's current market value is estimated at $16.3 billion.
- Sony held a presentation for investors focused on its gaming division. Among other things, the company announced that the PS5 is its most profitable console generation. The console's operating profit has already reached $13 billion (+44.4% compared to the PS4), and revenue is $136 billion (+27.1% compared to the PS4). Currently, more than 4,000 teams worldwide are developing games for PlayStation, but major franchises like EA Sports and Call of Duty contribute to more than half of PS Store's revenue. Sony also stated that it would continue to have a "thoughtful" approach to porting its games to PC and does not plan to move away from console development in favor of cloud technologies.
- Online observations noticed that Sony lifted PSN regional restrictions for some of its games on Steam. Now, titles like Helldivers 2, God of War: Ragnarök, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 are available for purchase in countries where PSN is not officially operational, such as Kazakhstan, Armenia, and Egypt.
- One possible reason for lifting these restrictions may have been the successful release of Stellar Blade on Steam. The game's peak concurrent players on the platform exceeded 192 thousand — the second-highest among all Sony-published titles. Only the multiplayer game Helldivers 2 attracted more simultaneous players on Steam (458.7 thousand). Stellar Blade holds a "very positive" rating of 94% based on 15.3 thousand reviews.
- Microsoft has canceled the development of its own handheld console, according to The Verge journalist Tom Warren. Per his information, the corporation decided instead to focus on a "new Xbox software platform." Nonetheless, several handheld devices under the Xbox brand, developed in partnership with other companies, are expected to hit the market in the future, like the recently showcased ROG Xbox Ally.
- Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive announced that by mid-June, 7 million people had played Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. The game took nine months to reach this audience, having been released in September 2024.
- Focus Entertainment also boasted that the number of players in RoadCraft surpassed 600 thousand in less than a month. The release of the construction sim exceeded the publisher's expectations and became one of the best in its history.
- Fallout Shelter celebrated its 10th anniversary. In celebration, Bethesda announced that the game has been downloaded 230 million times over the years. The distribution of downloads among PC, consoles, and mobile devices was not specified. However, according to AppMagic, the mobile version of Fallout Shelter accounted for 86 million downloads and generated $139 million in net IAP revenue.
