In 2024, over 205 million Americans played video games for more than an hour each week, according to the Entertainment Software Association's recent findings.

A February 2025 survey by YouGov, highlighting the ESA's 2025 Essential Facts About the Video Game Industry, included input from 5,000 individuals.

The study revealed the typical gamer in America is 26 years old, with an average of 18 years playing experience. Gender-wise, 47% of respondents were female, while 52% were male.

Comparatively, 2023 data showed a female representation of 46% and male representation of 53%.

In 2024, 83% of American households engaged with at least one gaming device, with mobile being the favored choice at 72%, marking a 5% increase from the previous year. PCs were used by 54%, and console gaming grew by 6% to 42% from 2023.

Regarding game acquisitions, 57% of participants downloaded free games over the past year, 40% paid for games, and 33% subscribed to gaming services.

The ESA highlighted "price and gameplay quality as primary considerations for new game selections."

Accessibility was essential for 31% of those surveyed, while 36% of respondents with disabilities rated games as "somewhat accessible."

More than half of people reported buying in-game content, with in-game currency being prominent at 34%. Character skins or customization items, along with expansion packs, were each chosen by 26%.

Player motivations included relaxation or passing time for 68% of gamers, 62% played for amusement, and 35% sought mental engagement.

The report noted older adults prioritized mental stimulation, whereas younger players valued joy, accessibility, social interactions, and stress relief in their gaming experiences.

Furthermore, it was found that compared to general adults, parents are more likely to play video games, with 82% engaging in gaming activities alongside their children.

Parental control usage was common, with 62% using it to manage in-game spending and 90% applying age-related restrictions.

ESA president and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis expressed, "Video games serve as a cultural staple, attracting diverse groups through their enjoyable and beneficial nature."

"With almost two-thirds of the U.S. population engaging regularly, it's crucial to acknowledge the positive impacts of gaming, from mental stimulation and relaxation to fostering social connections beyond gameplay," he added.
