The imminent closure of Echtra Games was initially reported by IGN. They requested a comment from Zynga to confirm the information, and Zynga provided an official statement.
Zynga explained that the decision to close the developers of Torchlight III was difficult but necessary. It was made within the framework of a strategic reorganization of the company's resources and priorities. Zynga promised to treat all employees affected by the closure with "maximum attention and respect."
The number of people who will lose their jobs is not disclosed in Zynga’s statement. IGN tallied on LinkedIn that at the start of summer 2025, Echtra Games had over 60 employees.
Echtra Games was founded in 2016 by Max Schaefer, co-author of the first two Diablo parts; David Glenn, artist of Diablo II; Tyler Thompson, lead of Diablo II: Lord of Destruction; and Justin Miller, developer of Torchlight II. In 2020, they released Torchlight III, and a few months later, joined Zynga. Under Zynga's wing, the team planned to develop a cross-platform RPG, but it was never announced.
