Six independent gaming studios in Wales have received a total of $1.15 million (£850,000) in grants from the Welsh Government.

This financial support comes from the Games Scale Up Fund for Wales, an initiative launched earlier this year by Creative Wales and the UK Games Fund, marking a first for the nation.

The funds will enable studios including Cloth Cat, COPA Gaming, Goldborough Studios, Rocket Science, Sugar Creative, and Wales Interactive to expand their projects, aiming for them to evolve from pilot stages to more robust, sustainable operations.

"This backing is more than just a headline; it's transformative," stated COPA Gaming director Osian Williams. "It equips us with the confidence and tools needed to grow sustainably and produce distinctive Welsh games for audiences worldwide."

Jack Sargeant, minister for culture at the Senedd, commented on the investment's impact: "The ambition and talent within Wales’ video games sector are gaining international attention. This funding is crucial for our local studios to enhance their capabilities and extend their global reach."

He added that his experience meeting Welsh developers at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco revealed their impressive creativity and the positive feedback from international publishers, underscoring Wales' emerging prominence in the global gaming industry.

Currently, Creative Wales continues to accept applications for The Games Development Fund, with opportunities ranging from £10,000 to £50,000 available for Wales-based companies creating video and immersive games, closing on Thursday, June 5.
