Sergey Orlovsky announced the release of the "Blitzkrieg" source code as open source

Great news for vintage enthusiasts. On GitHub, the source code of the iconic World War II strategy game "Blitzkrieg" has been made available.

This news came out via a post by Sergey Orlovsky, the founder and CEO of Nival, the company that developed the game:

“22 years ago, we released 'Blitzkrieg,' our first title to sell over a million copies. The project spawned a whole generation of military RTS games created on the Enigma Engine. Today, we are publishing the game's source code. Enjoy”.

The source code is released under a special license that prohibits commercial use. It is declared to be fully open for "the game community, education, and research." The code applies only to the single-player part of the game.

The files uploaded to GitHub include the data for "Blitzkrieg," accompanying development tools, compiled versions of the game, map editors, the actual source code, and tools for working with it, according to the description.

"Blitzkrieg" is not the first strategy game developed by the former Russian team whose code was opened to the public. In 2021, the source code for "Perimeter" by "K-D LAB" was made openly available. This facilitated the creation of a remaster of the game in 2024.
