Updated on April 16, 2025: According to Mobilegamer.biz, the recent layoffs were anticipated and impacted Niantic's Spatial division rather than its gaming segment. Scopely made it clear that "it will not be making any workforce reductions as part of our acquisition of Niantic’s games business."

Initial report, April 16, 2025: Following its $3.5 billion purchase by Scopely, a subsidiary of Savvy Games Group, Niantic has let go 68 employees.

As noted by Game Developer, Niantic has filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) in California, a requirement for companies planning significant layoffs, necessitating a 60-day advance notice.

The recent WARN report from California's Employment Development Department highlights that 68 staff members will be released, effective May 20, 2025.

These workforce reductions were first communicated on March 20, following an internal message from Niantic CEO John Hanke that later appeared on the company's website.

Hanke stated, "Niantic is splitting into two separate entities, resulting in the acquisition of our gaming business and the establishment of Niantic Spatial Inc. for our technology platform."

"As Niantic Spatial begins its new venture, we must function as a startup," he mentioned.

"After a thorough assessment of the structure needed for this new company, it became apparent that some roles would become unnecessary due to our shifted focus," added Hanke.

He further expressed, "These choices are challenging and do not reflect the individuals' work. We recognize the impact on their lives and deeply appreciate their invaluable contributions. We are committed to assisting them as they move on to new careers."
