HBO has confirmed a third season for its series The Last of Us, which will be announced ahead of the second season's launch on April 13.

The renewal was anticipated due to favorable responses for the second season, which brings elements of the 2020 PlayStation game, The Last of Us Part 2, to the screen, with Kaitlyn Dever joining the cast as Abby.

In February, Francesca Orsi, HBO's programming executive, suggested in an interview with Deadline that the series could span four seasons.

"We don’t have a complete or final plan, but I think it’s looking like four seasons. I wouldn’t want to confirm that, but it’s looking like this season and then two more seasons after this and we’re done."

Starring Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, the show initially premiered in January 2023. The first season received exceptional ratings, attracting around 32 million US viewers per episode.

The series set a new record for HBO with its inaugural season, surpassing the previously highest-rated first season record held by House of the Dragon.

The second season, featuring seven episodes, resumes five years after the conclusion of the first season. The show is the brainchild of Craig Mazin, known for Chernobyl, and Neil Druckmann from Naughty Dog.
