"Minecraft: The Movie" earns $157 million in its opening weekend at the US box office

A Minecraft Movie by Warner Bros. Pictures had an impressive opening, collecting $157 million in the United States and a total of $301 million worldwide during its debut weekend.
As detailed by Variety, the film was initially projected to bring in between $70 million and $80 million. The movie, which premiered on April 4, had a production budget of $150 million.
The Hollywood Reporter noted that this film has now achieved the highest domestic opening of 2025.
Comparatively, Illumination's Super Mario Bros. Movie earned $146 million during its initial three days in US theaters. Consequently, Minecraft tops the chart for video game adaptations in terms of domestic opening revenue.
The Super Mario Bros. Film was launched on April 5, 2023, which was a Wednesday. During its initial five days, it generated $204.6 million domestically and $377 million worldwide.
"We are thrilled by the global reception of A Minecraft Movie," commented Warner Bros. studio heads Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy.
They added, "The meticulous efforts of Jesse Ehrman and the Warner Bros. Pictures team over the past decade have culminated in this remarkable success."
The concept for a Minecraft movie at Warner Bros. was first revealed in 2014. In the following year, the film's development saw Rob McElhenney, known for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, initially selected to direct.
By 2019, there was a directorial change with Peter Sollett appointed as the new director. Ultimately, Jared Hess, of Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre fame, helmed the project.
