Cyan Worlds, the developer behind Myst, has let go of half its workforce
The team at Cyan Worlds, known for the game Myst, is facing a significant reduction, with half of its workforce being let go.
In a note posted on social media, the Spokane-based studio explained that 12 staff members are being laid off due to prevailing industry challenges. The message noted that this development wasn't unexpected for the team.
The studio expressed, "We are in a difficult position where we must consider the long-term viability of our studio against the ongoing demands of game development in 2025."
"Over the past year, we have been very open with our staff about the turbulent conditions we are navigating and the potential threats we face. Despite being anticipated, this layoff news is profoundly disheartening for everyone," the statement added.
The company emphasized that securing financial backing for their next venture and stabilizing the studio is their main focus. They've been through challenging periods before and are drawing on this resilience.
Cyan Worlds has also compiled a list of affected team members, who have agreed to have their details shared to assist them in finding new roles. You can view this list here.
The company confirmed that these layoffs will not interfere with the delivery timeline of any rewards associated with its current Kickstarter project, Firmament, which is still under development.
