According to reports, Warner Bros. Games has decided to cancel the development of extended content for Hogwarts Legacy
Reports indicate that Warner Bros. Games has shelved an unpublished expansion for the game Hogwarts Legacy, which was anticipated this year.
Bloomberg has reported, citing unnamed sources, that the decision to cancel both a paid DLC and a definitive version of the game is part of ongoing company restructuring efforts.
According to these sources, the abandonment occurred because the proposed content was deemed insufficient to warrant the projected pricing.
Warner Bros. opted not to provide a statement to Bloomberg regarding the canceled expansion.
According to Insider Gaming, plans for the DLC included approximately ten to 15 hours of fresh quests and activities.
In a recent shareholder letter following the latest financial performance review, Warner Bros. characterized 2024 as a "challenging year" for its gaming division, noting a 29% year-over-year revenue decline during the fourth quarter.
Prior to the Q4 results, the company executed a restructuring initiative, which led to shutting down three studios: Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. San Diego. This also halted Monolith’s planned Wonder Woman project.
The restructuring was described by the company as an opportunity to concentrate resources and capital on successful franchises and productions from renowned, high-caliber studios.
The strategy revolves around four major franchises that have each generated over $1 billion in sales: Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Mortal Kombat, and DC.
Warner Bros. Games highlighted that the success of Hogwarts Legacy has been central to their revised approach.
The company expressed confidence that with this renewed focus, it could continue to deliver top-tier games geared toward sustained consumer interaction, thereby expecting a return to profitability in 2025 and further significant growth contributions in the future.
