The studio behind Spectre Divide is closing due to the game's low popularity

Five years ago, veterans from Respawn Entertainment, Epic Games, Bungie, and several other companies formed a studio called Mountaintop, where they began developing the tactical shooter Spectre Divide. However, the game ultimately did not take off, and it was decided to close the studio.

In a farewell letter, Mountaintop head Nate Mitchell announced that the studio would cease to exist by the end of the week. Spectre Divide will also be closed, but slightly later — the game will shut down in a month.

Mitchell admitted that Spectre Divide ran into problems shortly after its release in September 2024. At that time, the shooter was available only on PC, and developers hoped to improve the situation by the time of the console release at the end of February 2025. When the game launched on consoles and its first season began, it seemed like things might have truly been fixed — 400,000 people played Spectre Divide during the first week. However, the buzz died down quickly, and the shooter failed to generate enough revenue to cover Mountaintop's everyday expenses. Eventually, the studio ran out of money.

"We tried every possible way to continue working. We searched for a publisher and new investments, and also considered selling. Nothing worked out. The industry is in a tough spot right now," Mitchell wrote.

Despite its financial difficulties, Mountaintop promised to refund players for the money spent in Spectre Divide since the start of the first season.

Currently, Spectre Divide has a "mixed" rating on Steam. Of 19,600 reviews, only 63% are positive. At its peak, the Steam version of the shooter attracted 30,900 people, but its daily player count subsequently dropped significantly. In recent months, it has rarely exceeded 300 concurrent players.
