The developer of Pokémon GO is reportedly aiming to earn $3.5 billion from the sale of the division. Bloomberg notes that there are no guarantees the deal will go through, but if the parties reach an agreement, an official announcement will be made in the coming weeks.
Representatives from Niantic and Scopely declined to comment on the Bloomberg article.
Niantic was founded in 2010 and initially was a startup within Google. The company became independent five years later. In addition to games, it engages in various research projects in the field of augmented reality. For instance, it is currently working on creating a so-called "Large Geospatial Model" based on artificial intelligence.
Among Niantic's games, the major hit is Pokémon GO. According to estimates from AppMagic, as of April 2024, players worldwide had spent $8 billion on the game — more than on any other mobile AR game. Niantic's gaming portfolio also includes titles such as Monster Hunter Now, Pikmin Bloom, Peridot, and Ingress Prime.
Niantic is the second company this week to decide to sell its gaming business. AppLovin announced similar plans earlier.
