nDreams launches a new internal studio and closes two others

nDreams has established Compass, a new studio, while simultaneously closing two other branches.

In a statement to Game Developer, the company announced the shutdown of nDreams Studio Orbital and nDreams Studio as part of a restructuring plan revealed last September. This move put up to 17.5% of employees at risk of layoffs.

The VR developer expressed that the teams in the closed studios had performed exceptionally well, and many of those employees have been retained. Some of them are now part of the newly formed Compass studio.

nDreams now operates three studios: Compass, nDreams Studio Elevation, and Near Light.

Leading Compass is veteran Callum Godfrey, whose past experience includes positions at Activision, Electronic Arts, and King. Godfrey has been with nDreams since November 2023, initially joining as the head of third-party publishing.

The Compass team includes 40 staff members, who have previously worked on projects like Synapse, released in 2023.

Godfrey noted, "VR audiences are increasingly varied, with many players now preferring VR as their main gaming choice, and Compass is well-equipped to cater to their interests."

He added, "Utilizing the extensive VR expertise of nDreams, Compass is dedicated to developing games that will resonate with a new wave of VR enthusiasts."
