MultiVersus is set to halt operations on May 30 following underwhelming performance

Player First Games has announced that MultiVersus, a fighting game by Warner Bros., will cease operations on May 30. The game has been available since May 28, 2024.
An update posted on their official blog highlighted that the upcoming season would be the game's last in terms of content updates.
The team expressed their gratitude, stating, "Everyone at Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games has dedicated themselves to MultiVersus. We're enormously thankful for the ongoing support from the MultiVersus community."
Players will retain access to online functionalities until May 30, at 9am PST, when Season 5 concludes. Effective immediately, in-game purchases with real money have been halted. Despite this, players can continue playing offline solo modes against AI if they download the latest version before the shutdown date.
Previously, Warner Bros. Discovery's top executives, CEO David Zaslav and CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels, addressed the game's unexpected performance in a financial review.
Zaslav reported a negative impact on results due to several gaming releases, including MultiVersus, which contributed over $100 million in impairments this quarter alone. This added to a total write-down exceeding $300 million for the year, a significant factor affecting the profitability of their Studios segment.
Looking forward, he mentioned expectations for the gaming division to be stable or slightly improved year-over-year in Q4, largely due to the prior release of Hogwarts Legacy on the Switch, despite reduced costs.
Zaslav acknowledged the challenges inherent in the industry, emphasizing the need for more consistent performance from their studios, particularly the games sector which isn't meeting its current potential.
