Midnight Society did not state the reasons for the closure, but it has repeatedly faced issues recently. In particular, in September 2024, the studio conducted "significant" layoffs. These occurred three months after the dismissal of one of the founders of Midnight Society — streamer Guy Beahm, also known as Dr Disrespect, due to a scandal involving explicit messages with a minor.
In a farewell letter, Midnight Society shared that at the time of closure, 55 people were employed at the studio. Currently, the studio is attempting to assist them in finding new employment.
Midnight Society existed for a little over three years. Its debut game was to be an extraction shooter called Deadrop, featuring NFT elements. The first playable versions of the game were trialed by paid pass holders. The project was slated for release in 2025 but will now not take place.
