In 2024, the contribution of the gaming industry to Canada's GDP amounted to 5.1 billion dollars

The consulting firm Nordicity and the Entertainment Software Association of Canada (ESAC) released a comprehensive report on the state of Canada’s gaming industry in 2024. Below are the key findings.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard

  • Last year, Canadian gaming companies contributed $5.1 billion to the country’s economy. The report does not specify how this figure changed compared to 2023. However, it mentions that in 2021, the contribution from games was 3% lower.
  • Of this amount, $3.9 billion was a direct contribution to the GDP made by gaming companies themselves. Over three years, this has increased by 29%.
  • The remaining $1.2 billion was an indirect contribution to the GDP made by retailers, suppliers, and others. Since 2021, this has decreased by 8%.
  • In 2024, 88% of the revenue for Canadian gaming companies came from overseas.
  • For Canadian companies with more than 100 employees, the share of foreign revenue was 91%. Small studios (5-10 employees) derived only 30% of their revenue from international markets. Meanwhile, so-called micro-studios (2-4 employees) earned 74% of their revenue abroad.

  • In 2024, there were 821 gaming companies based in Canada. In 54% of them, a maximum of four people were employed. Another 27% of companies had up to 25 employees.

  • In 2024, 34,000 employees were working in Canada's gaming industry. Of these, 88% were employed at local branches of foreign companies.
