Plans are underway for a new reboot of the Resident Evil film series

The Resident Evil franchise is set for a cinematic revival as multiple studios, including Warner Bros. and Netflix, are reportedly competing for the rights to produce the film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Zach Cregger will helm the project. Cregger gained recognition with his 2022 horror film, Barbarian, which marked his successful directorial debut.

Production might be led by Constantin Film along with PlayStation Productions. Constantin Film has been associated with the Resident Evil movie rights since the late 1990s and was responsible for the original series of films featuring actress Milla Jovovich.

Sourced reports suggest that Cregger’s version will reintegrate the horror essence of the original games, which began in 1996, seeking to stay truer to the initial installments.

The original film series launched in 2002, introducing the role of Alice, a unique character for the films, played by Jovovich.

A total of six movies were released in this series, cumulating with the 2021's reboot, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Cregger’s new adaptation is expected to chart a distinct path from this recent reboot.
